Commitment to Diversity

Learn more about CCCBA’s goal to promote and support diversity within our legal community and our county.

CCCBA’s commitment to advancing the needs of our diverse community is reflected by the launch of the Diversity Committee in 2002.

We’d like to acknowledge the founding members of the Diversity Committee: Dick Frankel, Larry Cook, Lisa Roberts & Robin Pearson.

The Diversity Committee supports the Minority Bar Coalition and organizes local diversity mixers and other events. The committee also promotes and participates in the Bay Area Minority Summer Clerkship Program.

The CCCBA received a joint award (along with the Alameda, Santa Clara and San Francisco Bar Associations) from the State Bar of California for the implementation of this long-running program. Within the broader Contra Costa community, the committee has helped to organize the Color of Justice program at the Contra Costa Superior Court and recruit legal professionals to volunteer at local high school law academies.

In 2019, CCCBA received an ABA Partnership Award for its innovative Diversity Award Checklist. See below for more information about this year’s Diversity Award checklist.

Diversity Initiatives

Diversity & Inclusion Initiative

The Diversity Committee’s newest endeavor is the CCCBA Diversity and Inclusion Initiative.

We encourage you to download the pledge, sign it and email it to Theresa Hurley thurley@cccba.org or send it to her at the CCCBA office (2300 Clayton Road, Suite 520, Concord, CA 94520).

Judicial Mentoring Program

This program was established to provide attorneys hailing from diverse backgrounds and contemplating a career on the bench with a structured method of obtaining guidance from experienced judges.

Diversity MCLE Program

Committee members present a free MCLE program to groups of CCCBA members called Investing in the Future of Diversity: Building a Better Law Practice.

Diversity Award

The Diversity Committee introduced a Diversity Award Checklist in 2017 and presented its first set of awards in 2018. This extensive checklist recognizes the diversity efforts of law firms ranging from sole practitioners to firms with more than 20 attorneys.

The 2019 Diversity Checklist is available now. Complete and return it by December 3, 2019. Awards will be presented at the CCCBA Installation Lunch in January 2020.
