How The Lawyer Referral and Information Service Works

  • The Contra Costa County Bar Association Lawyer Referral and Information Service has:
    •  Screened these attorneys for experience.
    •  Checked to see that they are properly licensed to practice law in California.
    •  Ensured that they have met specific qualifications and criteria.
    •  Confirmed that they carry malpractice insurance.
  • The Bar Association is not in the practice of law. The Lawyer Referral and Information Service merely makes referrals to experienced attorneys who practice in the appropriate area of law.

  • The experienced person at LRIS will assist you to determine the nature of your problem and find an attorney experienced in that area of law.

  • You pay a $30.00 fee to the Bar Association, for which you receive a thirty minute consultation with the attorney. If your matter involves personal injury,  workers compensation, or Social Security Disability, no fee is charged. The $30.00 fee is non-refundable once the appointment has been scheduled.  Same day appointments are not available.

  • The lawyer will advise you on your problem and, if additional help is needed, will discuss the fees needed to handle your matter further, which are determined by the nature and extent of the legal matter.

If you have a FAMILY LAW problem you may want to check out the following programs before you continue to see if one of them might be helpful to you.  (If you are interested in either one of the following programs, please refer to it at the beginning of your conversation with the interviewer.)
  • FLARe Family Law Mediation  A voluntary mediation program that is designed to be less expensive, less stressful, and less time consuming than traditional litigation. The program is staffed by trained family law attorney mediators who will meet with parties to assist them in settling their family law cases amicably and early. The use of this program is voluntary and must be agreed to by both parties.

  • Unbundling/Limited Representation  Refers individuals to family law attorneys who will “unbundle” their legal services, limiting their involvement to consulting or coaching. Unbundling is a way that an attorney can help you with part of your case while you do part of it yourself.
