Of the approximately 200 public interest attorneys working in the Bay Area, only 16 are in Contra Costa County. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 96,955 of the 984,816 people living in Contra Costa County are at or below 125% of the federal poverty line (in 2006 this is approximately $1,700/month for a mother and two children). According to the Legal Services Trust Fund, only $21.60 is spent per poor person in Contra Costa County compared to the $67.37 spent in San Francisco County. Pro Bono Section members focus their efforts on building upon the limited resources of the county's legal service agencies to fill the serious gaps in services and expand access to justice in our county. The Pro Bono Section brings together the legal services agencies - that serve thousands of poor individuals and families in Contra Costa - and members of the private bar who want to use their valuable legal skills to help their community and promote access to justice. The Pro Bono Section members include newly admitted attorneys and those with many years experience. Our members include solo practitioners, public interest attorneys, retirees, associates in small firms as well as those associates and partners in large local firms. The section brings together individuals who share a common passion for social justice and the desire to make a difference. The section coordinates and develops a full range of pro bono opportunities, educates the community about the serious legal needs of the poor, organizes judicial and bar recognition for pro bono efforts, and recruits volunteers to help serve the community. The range of pro bono opportunities in Contra Costa County include: extended representation; limited scope representation or legal assistance [limited issue(s) or hearing(s)]; mentorship and consultation of other pro bono attorneys or legal services advocates; co-counsel; participation in community education; and participation in a legal clinic or Attorney Counseling Evenings (ACE).
